They Called Him Sparky"They Called Him Sparky"
subtitled "Friends' Reminiscences of Charles Schulz"
Author and illustrator David Liverett has compiled and edited a collection of letters, stories, and photographs from friends who knew Schulz. The book focuses on those who knew him in the mid-1940s, before he was in the public eye, and in the 1950s, when he was on the road to becoming America's favorite cartoonist. These reminiscences and Schulz's own correspondence combine to form a picture of a caring, concerned, humorous, and spiritual man. Over fifty of Schulz's non-Peanuts cartoons are included, some not seen in over forty years. Most show Schulz's talent for drawing teenagers and adults, instead of the all-kid cartoons he is known for. The book's eighteen photographs show Schulz in a number of interesting lights, including Schulz serving as best man at a  wedding and receiving his first honorary doctorate.

Here is what Schulz's widow and others had to say about the book:

"Thank heavens for people who save letters! And thank heavens for David Liverett for publishing them in this book. The letters from Sparky in 1949 reveal the playful humor that he was to develop in his comic strip over the next decades. I love reading them and the reminiscences."
   -Jeannie Schulz

"Call him 'Sparky,' because after reading these warm recollections by his friends, you, too, will feel as if you've known Charles Schulz forever."
-Holly Miller, Senior Editor, The Saturday Evening Post

"Come journey with some of these friends as they share in this book their rich memories of Sparky."
      -Kenneth Hall

"This lovely little book tells the story of a relatively unknown but highly influential chapter of Charles Schulz's life. David Liverett, has given us a pleasant and sometimes homey glimpse into the formative faith-world of a deeply theological thinker."
     -Arthur Kelly

No collection of Charles Schulz memorabilia would be complete without this book.
